Every "best time to buy" guide says the same thing. Wait for Black Friday. Shop Prime Day. Buy laptops in August.

Most of it is wrong.

The Problem with Conventional Wisdom

Google "best time to buy a laptop" and you'll find twenty articles saying the same thing. They all cite each other. None of them cite actual price data.

Consumer Reports says buy TVs in January. NerdWallet says wait for Memorial Day. Penny Hoarder says Black Friday is the holy grail. They've been recycling the same advice since 2012.

The electronics market changed. Product launch cycles shifted. Retailers got smarter about pricing psychology. The old rules collapse when you track what prices do week by week.

Category-by-Category Breakdown

Laptops and Computers

The conventional wisdom: Buy in August for back-to-school deals or wait for Black Friday.

What the data shows: The best laptop prices happen in the 6-8 weeks after a new model launches. Not during a sale event.

When Intel or AMD drops a new chip generation, last-gen laptops fall fast. Retailers need shelf space. This happens on its own schedule, unaligned to any holiday.

Back-to-school "deals" in August are real but modest. You'll save 5-10% on mid-range machines. The deep discounts hit the models that are about to be replaced, and those are available year-round if you know where to look.

Best months: February through April, when CES announcements force clearance of previous-generation stock. October is also strong as manufacturers push old inventory before holiday refreshes.

Worst months: June and September. Inventory is tight and demand is high.

TVs and Displays

The conventional wisdom: Super Bowl season in January and February gets you the best TV prices.

What the data shows: This one is partially right, but for the wrong reason.

TV prices drop in January and February because new model lines debut at CES. Retailers discount current stock to make room. It's not about the Super Bowl. It's about inventory cycles.

The second dip happens in October and November. But here's the catch: many "doorbuster" TVs on Black Friday are stripped-down models made for the sale. The model number looks similar. The panel quality is not.

Best months: January through March for last year's flagship models. You'll get a premium TV at a mid-range price.

Worst months: April through June. New models are at full MSRP and old stock is picked over.

Smartphones

The conventional wisdom: Buy when the new model drops and the old one gets discounted.

What the data shows: This is correct, but the timing is more specific than people think.

Apple announces in September. Samsung announces flagships in January and July. The price drops on previous models start the day of the announcement, not the day of release.

The sweet spot is 2-4 weeks after announcement, before the old model goes out of stock at major retailers. After that, you're dealing with marketplace sellers and the discount narrows.

For Android phones outside Samsung, the pricing pattern is different. Mid-range Android phones hit their best prices around 4-5 months after launch. There's no event that triggers it. It's pure demand curve.

Best months: October for iPhones (one month post-launch). February for Samsung Galaxy S series. For everything else, track the individual product.

Worst months: The month before a flagship launch. Prices hold firm because retailers know a wave of trade-ins is coming.

Headphones and Audio

The conventional wisdom: Black Friday is the best time for headphones deals.

What the data shows: Headphones are one of the few categories where Black Friday deals are legitimate.

Audio products have long shelf lives and high margins. Retailers can afford real discounts. We've tracked 15-30% drops on models like the Sony WH-1000XM series and AirPods Pro during November.

But here's what the guides miss: Amazon runs comparable headphone deals during Prime Day, and again during their October sale event. The November discount is not unique.

Best months: July (Prime Day), October (Amazon fall sale), November (Black Friday). These three windows are roughly equivalent.

Worst months: December. Prices snap back for gift-buying season. January is also weak as retailers recover margin.

Smart Home Devices

The conventional wisdom: Buy Echo and Nest devices on Prime Day or Black Friday.

What the data shows: Amazon and Google use their own smart home hardware as loss leaders. The deals are real and predictable.

Amazon Echo devices hit their lowest prices during Prime Day and Black Friday without exception. We're talking 40-60% off. Google Nest devices follow the same pattern with slightly smaller discounts.

Third-party smart home gear (Philips Hue, Ring, Arlo) follows a different pattern. These products see gradual price erosion over their lifecycle, with modest bumps during sale events.

Best months: July and November for Amazon and Google hardware. For third-party gear, prices are stable enough that waiting for a sale event rarely saves more than 10%.

Worst months: January through April. No major sale events and no product cycle pressure.

Gaming Consoles and Accessories

The conventional wisdom: Wait for holiday bundles.

What the data shows: Console pricing is the most rigid category in electronics. Manufacturers control pricing tightly.

Sony and Microsoft rarely drop the base price of current-gen consoles outside of official price cuts. What changes is bundle value. Holiday bundles include a game or extra controller at the same price point. That's a real discount on the total package, even though the console price stays flat.

Accessories are a different story. Controllers, headsets, and charging docks follow normal retail patterns. Black Friday discounts of 20-30% on controllers are common and genuine.

Best months: November for bundles and accessories. Official price cuts (when they happen) typically land in August or September, ahead of the holiday season.

Worst months: February through May. Full prices, no bundles, no pressure on retailers to discount.

The Black Friday Myth

Black Friday is the most overrated shopping event in electronics.

Retailers raise prices in October and early November. The "discount" on Black Friday is measured against an inflated baseline. A TV that sold for $499 in September gets listed at $599 in November, then "discounted" to $479 on Black Friday. You saved $20 off the real price, not $120 off the sticker.

This isn't speculation. Price tracking data confirms it across categories. The FTC has investigated it. Retailers keep doing it because it works.

Some Black Friday deals are genuine. Doorbuster quantities on specific SKUs can be real loss leaders. But the advertised "up to 50% off" banners? Marketing.

The products most likely to have real Black Friday discounts: headphones, smart home devices, and last-gen accessories. The products least likely: current-gen laptops, new-model TVs, and flagship phones.

Amazon Prime Day: Worth It or Not?

Prime Day started in 2015 as a manufactured shopping event. It's grown into the second-biggest sale event after Black Friday. But the deals are uneven.

Amazon's own products (Echo, Fire tablets, Kindle, Ring) see genuine deep discounts. These are loss leaders designed to lock you into the ecosystem. If you want an Echo Dot, Prime Day is the time.

Third-party electronics on Prime Day are hit or miss. Sony, Bose, and Samsung offer modest discounts, roughly equivalent to their deals at other points in the year. The "Lightning Deals" create urgency, but the prices aren't unique.

The best Prime Day strategy: know the price history of the specific product you want before the sale starts. If the Prime Day price is the lowest it's been in 90 days, it's a real deal. If it's been that low before, it's just normal price fluctuation dressed up with a countdown timer.

The Real Pattern: Product Launch Cycles Matter More Than Sales Events

Here's what every "best time to buy" guide misses.

The single biggest factor in electronics pricing isn't Black Friday, Prime Day, or back-to-school season. It's the product replacement cycle.

When a manufacturer announces the next generation, the current generation starts dropping. This is predictable. It follows the manufacturer's launch cadence. And it produces deeper, longer-lasting discounts than any 48-hour sale event.

Apple launches phones in September. Samsung launches Galaxy S in January and Galaxy Z in July. Sony launches PlayStation hardware at unpredictable intervals but announces months ahead. Intel and AMD update laptop chips annually, usually Q1.

If you track these cycles, you can predict the best buying window for any specific product with more accuracy than following a "best month to buy" calendar.

The calendar approach treats all laptops the same. All TVs the same. But a Dell XPS has a different replacement cycle than a ThinkPad. A Sony A90K has a different cycle than a Samsung QN90B. The specific product matters more than the category.

How to Find Your Best Time to Buy

Stop asking "when is the best time to buy a laptop?" Start asking "when is the best time to buy this specific laptop?"

The answer requires three data points:

1. Current price. What does it cost right now, at multiple retailers?

2. Price history. What has it cost over the past 30, 60, 90 days? Is the current price high, low, or average?

3. Replacement cycle. Has the manufacturer announced or rumored a successor? If so, prices will fall further. If not, the current price might be as good as it gets.

You can research this manually. Check a product every few days. Keep a spreadsheet. Set calendar reminders to revisit it.
